The One World

August 1990

The year was 2020. Earth was suffering from the years of neglect. The trees were gone in the city
save for the artificial trees that were planted in an attempt to give the City some semblance of the
natural beauty the earth once possessed. Most of the rainforests were gone. Plant life was almost
nonexistent. There were great glass domes that housed what was left of human kind after all the
wars and famines. The people that didn’t die fighting in the 3rd and 4th world wars died from the
plagues that mercilessly swept though the earth’s populations. Day-walkers roamed the streets and
most of the animals that survived barely escaped being eaten or rationed out during the famines.

Many of the great mountains had been destroyed by the nuclear and solar weapons used in the great
world wars. All of the major American cities now laid waste in great piles of rubble and ash. The
inhabitants that survived the nuclear and solar attacks had long since abandoned what was left of
their homes and lives, loved ones who died or had been killed were left in the parks or in back yards.
The surviving members of the families left the dead anywhere they could find a space. The
cemeteries were overflowing with coffins and graves. The concept of burying the dead had long
since been abandoned. Only make shift coffins were used now. Life was different. Life was about
survival. The only thing that saved human kind was the creation of the life sustaining glass domes.
People from different countries around the world had made their way to what was left of America.

The remaining people had somehow managed to start living again. Artificial pollination served as the
means by which crops were grown. The scientists learned how to reproduce artificial DNA in the
year 1998. They were able to clone different forms of plant and animal life. Some of the genetic
maps used for cloning several different agricultural crops had been hidden away by the government
during the wars. The genetic maps were used to grow corn, beans, tomato, fruit and others. There
were special areas in the dome cities designated for growing agricultural cops and livestock. Meat
had almost grown too expensive, but the protein was critical. The five domed cities of what was
referred to as the One World was all that remained of non-mutant humankind; therefore, the amount
of food per person was calculated very carefully to insure that all that were left would be well fed.

During the years between 2012 and 2015, the scientists that survived worked diligently to find the
answers to the plagues that had swept the land. There were no more colds or sickness. Everyone
was healthy. There was no more homelessness or starvation. All seemed well in the One World.
People began to live again. Every family was permitted 2 children. Every person had a job, a home,
and a MPTV or Magnetically Powered Transportation Vehicle. These vehicles utilized solar-induced
magnetism to levitate above a guide-way. These MPTVs could achieve speeds of 130 meters or more
per second. Even traffic problems had been eliminated, and at 130 m/s commuting issues didn’t exist.

Ending

All of the excuses that had been used for problems in the world had been eliminated. But somehow
some of the power generators which split atoms as a means of creating an unlimited energy source
began to produce a variant and mutated form of oxygen 04 became lethal. No more wars, but the
children that were born after 2013 had birth defects as the result of the steady depletion of the 02 in
the domesphere. Some people eliminated others in an attempt to reduce the numbers of 02 consuming
life forms. Yet, just as the cure was identified, they found that 02 was not their real problem, but
rather that the Sun no longer produced sufficient heat to survive without body heat. So, after many
people had been eliminated, it was sharing human breath and body heat that was the key to survival.
